About this case

On January 29, 2025, American Airlines Flight 5342 departed Wichita, Kansas, for Washington, D.C. Less than a mile from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), the airliner collided mid-air over the Potomac River with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter on a designated military route. All 64 people on the jet and the three service members in the helicopter were killed. The NTSB, FAA and Department of Defense are investigating—reviewing flight data, air traffic control communications, crew qualifications and equipment performance—and the cause remains undetermined.
